::[ OSI Conference 2003]::

In spring 2003, the Open Society Institute invited the College of Health Sciences, American University of Armenia to host a workshop on curriculum development processes for Master of Public Health Programs. The AUA College of Health Sciences is a "Stream 1" participant in the OSI/ASPHER Program and recently underwent the ASPHER PEER assessment process (http://www.ensp.fr/aspher/). In addition, AUA is undergoing an institutional level accreditation review by the US accrediting body, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

The AUA College of Health Sciences has an affiliation agreement with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Consequently, the AUA curriculum is modeled on US standards for graduate public health education and adapted for the NIS context. The AUA MPH program was developed through a competency-based approach that emphasizes the definition of outcomes to be achieved as a basis for designing courses and related learning experiences.

The Yerevan workshop will build upon and complement the two prior workshops on this theme funded by OSI: Kaunas, Lithuania (February 2003) (Report on Kaunas workshop) and Jerusalem, Israel (March 2002) as part of OSI's Public Health Workforce Development Initiative. (http://health.osf.lt)

The conference aims to

Build upon prior OSI sponsored workshops to develop skills, techniques, and templates for the rationale design of public health curricula
Engage in critical discussions of core public health competencies and teaching modalities
Develop networks and linkages for collaborative curriculum development and the exchange of ideas

The conference will consist of the 3-day workshop with the focus on competency-based approaches to curriculum development in public health. About 30-35 people from CEE and NIS countries and 5-7 invited speakers will participate in the workshop
