TB Treatment and Care in Armenia

Davtyan NahapetyanOn February 14, the AUA School of Public Health hosted Dr. Armen Hayrapetyan, the Director of the National Tuberculosis Control Office (NTP) of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia and Dr. Karapet Davtyan (AUA MPH 2009), the Head of Monitoring and Evaluation Department of NTP as guest lecturers. Dr. Hayrapetyan presented about Tuberculosis (TB) treatment and care in Armenia, financing mechanisms of TB care, introduction of E-TB manager, laboratory capacity, key achievements and current challenges in TB care, and collaborative research projects with AUA School of Public Health. After the presentation Dr. Hayrapetyan and Dr. Davtyan talked about internship and research opportunities for MPH Students in the National Tuberculosis Control Office and answered many interesting questions from students and faculty members.

Dr. Armen Hayrapetyan is the Director of the National Tuberculosis Control Office of the Ministry of Health of Armenia since 2011. During the short period of his management, the National Tuberculosis Control program significantly improved. During the recent years the NTP was involved in different researches activities, including collaborative research with the Center for Health Services Research and Development of AUA on TB treatment. Dr. Hayrapetyan earned his PhD in Epidemiology from the National Institute of Health of the Ministry of Health of Armenia in 2010. He obtained his MD degree from Yerevan State Medical University in 1998. During 2006-2011, Dr. Hayrapetyan worked as a coordinator of the Avian Influenza Preparedness Project and was the Executive Coordinator of the “Surveillance and Response to Avian and Pandemic Influenza” Grant Project by CDC, Atlanta, USA. During 2002-2006, Dr. Hayrapetyan worked as a head specialist/Epidemiologist in the State Hygiene and Anti-Epidemic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Health. Dr. Hayrapetyan has been actively involved in different health care research projects and presented in international conferences, participated in several workshops and certificate programs.

Dr. Karapet Davtyan has been working in the National Tuberculosis Control Office (NTP) of the Ministry of Health of Armenia since 2011 and in January 2012 has been appointed as the Head of the Monitoring and Evaluation Department of NTP. Dr. Davtyan successfully implemented supportive decentralized monitoring and evaluation system for the National Tuberculosis Control Program. He also works as a Clinical Study Manager at Darmantest Laboratories, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration compliant Contract Research Organization, since 2013. Dr. Davtyan graduated from Yerevan State Medical University as a general practitioner in 2007 and in 2008 completed internship program of general medicine. In 2009 he has received his MPH degree form AUA and in 2013 completed the MPH/MBA dual degree program. Dr. Davtyan participated in several international workshops and certificate programs in the field of health care management and development. In his public health career in private and public sectors, he has been actively involved in research studies, particularly focusing on tuberculosis and cardiology.
